Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania / Mecklenburg Baltic coast26.03.20182 000 hours of sunshine per year
Miles of sandy beaches, the beauty of the Baltic Sea, picturesque landscape and unique architecture of imperial seaside resorts make Usedom a true tourist attraction. With more than 2,000 hours of sunshine per year the island is one of the sunniest places in Germany. In the summer, beach life and a bit of dolce vita take over. During the cold season, it is time for long walks on the beach, cycling tours through the so-called Achterland or a treatment in one of the many spa facilities. With 3,000 events all year round, Usedom has a lot to offer. Germany’s second largest island, tucked away in the North-East of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is a popular destination.
The extraordinary mix of beach, nature and light makes every vacation between the Achterwasser Lagoon and the Baltic Sea a highlight of the year. Some love the shore and the sea, others prefer the Usedom hinterland which they explore during extended ramblings or cycling tours. Many simply look for a break in the middle of nature and are enchanted by the maritime flair of the island. The elegant seaside resorts Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin with their outstanding piers and unique architecture are a major attraction and perfectly illustrate the beginning of the Baltic Sea bathing culture in the 19th century.
On the island of Usedom you feel straight away that you have finally arrived. It doesn’t matter whether you have chosen one of the star-rated hotels or one of the many sweet holiday homes and guesthouses - you will feel at home then and there. Whether you reside in one of the noble mansions, in a farmhouse or a houseboat, whether you visit Usedom in summer or winter, there are diverse and exceptional ways of taking a vacation on Germany’s Sunny Island. During the cold season hotels with extensive spa facilities and holiday homes with saunas and fireplaces are particularly tempting. Many of these are to be found along the coastline between Ahlbeck and Zinnowitz as well as in the hinterland between Lieper Winkel and the peninsula Gnitz. Usedom offers many treatments free of charge: Nordic Walking and yoga on the beach, thalassotherapy, or climatotherapy. And those who prefer to be pampered in one of the spa facilities can choose from a large range of wellness-hotels. They attract visitors with seabuckthorn massages, treatments with algae-mousse, with milk or beer baths.
Those who are looking for cultural events will definitely get their money’s worth. On offer are events such as: Klassik am Meer (Classical Drama), Kleinkunstfestival (Festival of Cabaret & Performing Arts), Usedomer Literaturtage (Usedom Literature Festival), Usedomer Musikfestival (Usedom Music Festival), and the Vineta-Festspiele (Openair Theatre). The Grand Schlemm (Grand Feast) and the Usedomer Heringswochen (Usedom Herring Weeks) offer local delicacies in Spring, in Autumn there are the Wildwochen (Venison Weeks).
It is easiest to fly to Hamburg or Berlin, when travelling to Usedom. There are non-stop flights from many European cities. There are also long distance bus-services. From Hamburg or Berlin trains and longdistance busses offer connections to Usedom. Usedomer Bäderbahn (UBB), a subsidiary of the German national railway, has several stations along the island.
If you come by car you can reach Usedom via Motorway A 20 and the connecting A-road.
