21.02.2018Who's the coolest wine of all?
The German Wine Institute (DWI) will give wine aficionados and experts their say on the matter through an online voting platform.
At www.germanwines.de/online-voting (English) and www.deutscheweine.de/aktuelles/online-abstimmung (German) they can choose from 20 wines that the DWI has selected as finalists for "Germany's Coolest Wines." Until 11 March each visitor can vote for three different wines, and the top three overall favorites will be announced on 18 March 2018 at the DWI's stand at ProWein, the world's largest wine trade fair.
The roster of finalists was selected via a multi-stage process that started with 385 submitted wines. An independent panel of industry experts kicked off the competition with a blind tasting, passing through only those wines meeting their strict quality criteria. Their nominations were then assessed by an expert jury. Its members included Romeo Bay (Butter. creative agency, Düsseldorf), Björn Bittner (wineblogger, BJRLeBouquet.com), Olaf Deneberger (CEO of the Deutscher Designer Club and owner of Liquid communications design), Kolja Orzeszko (adidas - Senior Director Business Creation and Co - Founder Geile Weine), Sebastian Zabel (Editor-in-Chief of Rolling Stone Germany) and German Wine Queen Katharina Staab.
"The jury was impressed — not just by the quality of the wines, but also by the creativity of our wine producers," reported Monika Reule, Managing Director of the DWI and also a member of the jury. "What mattered to us was not just the label's design and packaging, but also the concept and story that the producers provided about the wines. We ended up having a series of somewhat heated and highly interesting debates," Reule noted.
"At the retail level, the look and feel of a bottle of wine can make all the difference in whether it gets taken off the shelf or not. When it comes to direct marketing, though, consumers are increasingly looking for a fascinating story well conveyed," explains jury member Romeo Bay.
The final 20 wines range from naturally cloudy sparkling wines (PetNat) and joint projects between multiple winegrowers to an orange wine. Each entry reflects the tremendous experimental energy of Germany's winegrowers.
The DWI will be offering the wines from 18 to 20 March at its ProWein stand (Hall 13, A 80) for public tasting, and will be presenting them throughout the year at other events. The top three finishers will also be poured at the "Cité du Vin" wine event in Bordeaux.
