Baden-Württemberg / Stuttgart Region / Stuttgart13.11.2017Musical City of World Renown
Stuttgart enjoys an outstanding reputation for music. With the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Stuttgart State Orchestra, the Stuttgart Philharmonic and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra (to name but a few of its ensembles), the musical city of Stuttgart guarantees a fascinating sound experience not only in its own concert halls.
In the autumn of 2016 the SWR Symphony Orchestra – the result of a merger between the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart and the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg – gave its first public performance.
This new orchestra formation is one of the most ambitious fusions in the recent history of the ARD (Association of Public Broadcasting Corporations in Germany). Though the SWR Symphony Orchestra is new, it nevertheless has a long history: both of the two ensembles – the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart and the SWR Symphony Orchestra of Baden-Baden and Freiburg – look back on a long tradition of over 70 years. The clearly-defined profile of the new orchestra comprises not only avant-garde but also contemporary music. Well-known conductors, including Peter Eötvös, David Afkham, Konrad Junghänel and David Zinman, accompany its first season.
The Württemberg State Orchestra Stuttgart has a 400-year history which makes it one of the oldest ensembles in Germany, and one that is steeped in tradition. It owes its reputation to the many famous international conductors involved with the orchestra over the years. However, it is no less renowned for its exceptional performances of contemporary works. Sylvain Cambreling took over as the new principal conductor at the beginning of the 2012/2013 season.
Founded in 1924, the Stuttgart Philharmonic is the orchestra of Baden-Württemberg's state capital. On top of its varied appearances in several concert series in Stuttgart, the orchestra also performs regularly in other cities in southwest Germany and gives guest appearances at home and abroad each year. Gabriel Feltz, its principal conductor and the state capital's General Director of Music since the 2004/2005 season, took his leave in 2013, enthusiastically acclaimed. Since 2015 Dan Ettinger has been the Philharmonic's principal conductor.
For over 60 years now the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra has been high on the list of first-class orchestras of international repute. From 2003-2006 Michael Hofstetter, its principal conductor, directed the ensemble on world tours and concerts in Stuttgart and in Europe. The orchestra had already made an excellent name for itself under its previous conductor, Dennis Russell Davies (1995-2006), as well as under its founder and long-term director, Karl Münchinger. On 1st September 2013 Matthias Foremny took over as the orchestra's new principal conductor.
