Baden-Württemberg / Stuttgart Region / Stuttgart23.03.2018King Wilhelm's Palace is in the process of becoming a municipal museum
The “Stadtpalais – Museum of Stuttgart” is scheduled to open in April 2018 after undergoing conversion from the autumn of 2013 onwards. Since September 2017 open days, exhibitions and events have already been held in the finished section.
How did Stuttgart become what it is today, and what were the decisive impulses for the city's development? Original settings and architectural monuments still today remind us of the city's past. King Wilhelm's Palace – itself the scene of important historical events – is to be Stuttgart's new museum.
In the new Stadtpalais two "Century Rooms" will illustrate chronologically the history of the city from the middle of the 18th century onwards: its development from a minor royal seat to an industrialised town in the 19th century, and eventually to a 20th-century metropolis defined by migration. The Stadtpalais not only tells the (hi)story of the town: it's also a place where discussions about the city's present and future will take place. The permanent exhibition will elucidate the city's present and past. Temporary exhibitions will give deeper insights into specific aspects of the permanent displays, with the focus on themes related to the city's history and on issues related to its architecture and urban development.
Architecturally, the ground floor of the building is to be the city's "extended living room". Besides the museum shop there will also be a lecture hall seating 120 and an area for special exhibitions. The foyer and the hall will provide room for events and discussions, and can also be used for presentations, festivities and other occasions.
The exhibition floors are to occupy the first and second storeys. The first floor will present the permanent exhibition "Stuttgarter Stadtgeschichte(n)" ("Stuttgart's (Hi)story"). The "City Laboratory" on the garden level invites children and young people to plan their own future in the town. This is an invitation to up-and-coming town planners to explore topics of building culture in exhibitions, workshops and projects.
